The Elysian is a boutique villa resort in Seminyak, Bali, that blends contemporary style with Balinese tropical living. The project, comprising 26 private one-bedroom villas and one two-bedroom villa, is designed as a luxury sanctuary, with each villa featuring its own private pool and walled garden.

D+DM provided project management and design coordination, ensuring the architectural vision was realised from concept to completion, delivering an intimate, forward-thinking resort that has become a benchmark for its market.

Context

Opened in 2005, The Elysian was conceived to offer the seclusion of a private villa with the full services of a luxury hotel. The design, led by Brian Quirk, centres on a contemporary interpretation of a Balinese village, using natural stone and wood materials intended to patinate and mature over time. The core of the principals' (The Elysian Group) expertise was in-house services, including concepts, architecture, design, and project management, to control the vision from start to finish.

Approach

Given the vision to create a unique, design-led hotel, the project required meticulous management of the architectural and interior details. D+DM’s approach centred on faithfully executing the contemporary design, which features innovative, flexible spaces. This included managing the construction of the 26 identical villas, with their signature giant doors, concertina windows, and indoor-outdoor day spaces. The team also coordinated the high-end fit-out, including custom furnishings, King Koil mattresses, and sunken baths.

Result

The Elysian successfully launched as one of Bali's most well-regarded boutique hotels, recognised for its innovative style and high service standards. The project has received numerous awards and was named "one of Southeast Asia's 20 Best Resort Developments in 2010" by The Property Report. The resort's design and high-quality execution, last renovated in 2015, have ensured its high occupancy and status as a coveted, intimate destination in the heart of Seminyak.
