Education / Indigenous Cultural Centre | Project Management & Design Coordination

The Yulang Indigenous Knowledge Centre is a proposed landmark facility at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), envisioned as a central hub for Indigenous education, research, engagement, and cultural celebration within the university campus.

D+DM provided project management and design coordination support during the initial strategic planning and concept development phases, assisting UTS in defining the project scope, vision, and delivery pathway.

Context

UTS identified the need for a dedicated, high-profile space to consolidate and elevate its Indigenous programs and engagement activities. The project aims to create a culturally safe and welcoming environment for Indigenous students, staff, and the wider community, fostering collaboration and showcasing Indigenous knowledge systems. The challenge involved integrating this significant cultural facility within the dense urban campus of UTS, ensuring it was both physically prominent and culturally appropriate.

Approach

D+DM’s project management approach focused on facilitating early-stage stakeholder consultations involving Indigenous elders, community members, UTS staff, and students. We assisted in translating the project's cultural and functional aspirations into a preliminary brief for architectural exploration. Our role involved coordinating feasibility studies, site analysis, and initial concept design options, ensuring alignment with UTS’s strategic objectives, campus masterplan, and Indigenous protocols.

Result

The strategic planning phase successfully established a strong foundation and vision for the Yulang Indigenous Knowledge Centre. It defined key spatial requirements, cultural design principles, and potential site locations, enabling UTS to proceed with further design development and funding initiatives. The project represents a significant commitment by UTS to Indigenous advancement and reconciliation.
