Sunway Putra Place

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Mixed Use / Urban Regeneration | Project Management & Design Coordination

Sunway Putra Place represents the landmark transformation of an iconic integrated development in Kuala Lumpur’s central business district. The project involved the extensive refurbishment and repositioning of the entire complex—comprising Sunway Putra Mall, Sunway Putra Hotel, and Sunway Putra Tower—into a vibrant, modern, and cohesive mixed-use destination.

D+DM provided project management and design coordination support, ensuring the complex redevelopment achieved its commercial objectives, design integrity, and a seamless re-introduction to the market.

Context

Acquired by Sunway REIT, the aging Putra Place complex required a transformative vision to unlock its strategic potential. Located opposite the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, the project's primary challenge was to completely overhaul the existing structures while integrating them into a single, high-performing asset.

D+DM’s engagement focused on managing the complex, multi-phased refurbishment. This required precise coordination between retail, hotel, and office components, navigating the constraints of an existing structure, and managing stakeholder expectations to deliver a unified architectural vision and a revitalised public realm.

Approach

The project's complexity demanded a highly structured and integrated approach. D+DM’s project management framework was central to coordinating the extensive architectural, structural, and interior upgrades across the three distinct components.

The team established clear communication protocols and milestone tracking to manage the design and construction interface, ensuring the ambitious design vision was feasible and delivered to the highest quality. This role was critical in managing the fast-tracked programme to minimise downtime and relaunch the asset successfully, balancing the distinct technical requirements of a 650-room hotel, a 24-storey office tower, and a multi-level retail mall.

Result

The Sunway Putra Place transformation successfully repositioned the development as a premier urban destination in Kuala Lumpur. The project re-established the complex as a vibrant commercial hub, demonstrating how ambitious urban regeneration can breathe new life into an existing landmark.

Through disciplined project management and design coordination, D+DM contributed to the successful delivery of a complex, large-scale regeneration project, transforming an underperforming asset into a coherent, high-value, and fully integrated mixed-use precinct.
